The hills in the background are loacted in Reikorangi and are situated on the property of 26 Ngaitawa Road(Opposite the Reikorangi Pottery (Cafe). This picture must have been taken in the paddock that is now opposite what is now the community hall on the Akatawa Road. Interestingly the big pine tree that we have on the nearest hill is not visible and provides some idea of how old the tree is now. Sadly it was hit by lightning some years ago and is now due to fall off this hill. Just left of centre a small slip (cliff face) can be seen. This is now a very clear feature when driving past the property and gives some idea of how much the ground has eroded over the past 100 years or so.
Thank you Ian for that really interesting background and history. envirohistory NZ

This was a really lovely photo to see. I grew up on that property – this must’ve been taken when they were clearing it for farmland. It has very few trees on it now, but there is still a logged pine forest behind, the land of which you can see as the trees in the far background.

Great to see. We are putting a book together of Reikorangi memories. If you have relatives who lived in the valley from the 1895 to the 1970s, we would love to hear from you. Christine.
